Introduction to GPS / Geocaching
If you've never handled a GPS, then here's a light-hearted opportunity for learning the practical do's and don'ts of hiking GPS units. We use the delightful "geocaching" treasure hunt game as practice. Great for kids! GPS units supplied, or bring your own. Four hours. $65 per person, minimum four.
Map and GPS
Want to use your GPS while hiking into the big, blank area of the on-board map? This half-day introduction helps you learn how to use a handheld GPS with standard paper hiking maps to identify locations, plan routes and find your way back. Suitable for those with little or no GPS experience. This workshop is geared for the slightly more serious GPS user than the previous listing. GPS units supplied, or bring your own. $65 per person, minimum four.
Introduction to Snowshoeing
Although snowshoeing is not difficult, there are still "tricks" which can make your trips much more enjoyable. A structured introduction to snowshoe types, clothing, other equipment, and on- and off-trail techniques. Offered in season only. Equipment provided, or use your own. $80 per person; minimum three, maximum six.
Map Reading for Hikers
Even if you never plan on leaving a trail, map reading is an essential hiking skill. Learn to read topographic hiking maps, and experiment with practical route-finding skills. Four hours. $60 per person, minimum four.
Introduction to Digital Nature Photography, Field Trip
For those making the switch to digital, there are some concepts that will make your photos more dynamic, some techniques and camera features that will help better capture the natural beauty of Santa Fe. Although typically geared as a beginner-level introduction, more intermediate topics can be covered on request. Suitable for owners of compact, "hybrid" or digital SLR cameras. Includes some follow-up critique on your own photos. Must be arranged in advance, no minimum number, please add $50 to your regular hike.
