One of Santa Fe's best features is its year-round hiking opportunities! The Land of Enchantment features sunny days, amazing views, and a plethora of trails.

Your Outspire hiking guide will work with you to plan the perfect outing for your interests and needs. With Outspire, you dictate the pace. We'll provide the use of a daypack stocked with water, yummy trail snacks, poncho, and adjustable trekking poles. Your hiking guide will carry maps, binoculars, nature guides, and a first aid kit. Hikers should bring extra clothing layers, sturdy shoes, and a desire for fun!

Hiking tours of any length are available, lasting from 1 to 7 hours on the trail. We design tours for all levels and all abilities. Staying true to our belief that playing outside has the power to inspire, all outings include plenty of breathers to enjoy the views, soak it all in, and replenish with water and snacks.

Santa Fe has trails to suit every level of fitness and interest. In order to plan the right hike for you, we ask that you review the Effort Ratings below as well as the Trail Descriptions.

Outspire is approved to guide in Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks Monument, Bandelier National Monument, Santa Fe National Forest and other lands by permit, and we know these and other delightful places well.

Effort Ratings

Level 1: A hike for anyone, even the exercise-phobic. Beginning at elevations below 8000', with little elevation gain and no more than two miles long. Hikes last up to 3 hours.
Level 2: For those not afraid of a little aerobic workout, these hikes entail climbs of up to 1000' feet. These also include hikes with a gentle grade but uneven terrain. Hikes last up to 3 hours.
Level 3: Climbs of 1000' to 2000' cumulative elevation gain. Hikes last from 2 - 4 hours.
Level 4: Hikes with at least 2000' cumulative elevation gain OR Hikes that begin above 10,000'. Hikes last from 4 - 6 hours.

General Trail Descriptions

Alpine Hiking

These hikes are at an elevation of 9000' - 11,800'. Varied hikes in this category, Effort Ratings of 2-4. Snow levels dictate when hikes are available. General description: Santa Fe is nestled against the Sangre de Cristo mountains, the southernmost stretch of the Rocky Mountains. Hike amidst ponderosa pines, aspens, and at higher elevations, spruce and fir trees. Varied hikes can include forested, creekside hikes or hikes that climb for big views of the Pecos Wilderness and the Santa Fe desert basin.

Low Alpine Hiking

These hikes are at an elevation of 7500' - 9,100' Varied hikes in this category, Effort Ratings of 1-4. General description: Classic Santa Fe forest! Hike on a network of rolling singletrack trails through juniper, pinon, and ponderosa pine forest. These hikes are available year-round, feature great views, and are a great workout.

High Desert Hiking

These hikes are at an elevation of 6000' - 7000'. Varied hikes in this category, Effort Ratings of 2-4. Uniquely New Mexico, these hikes wander through high desert scenery and feature expansive views, unique geology reflecting the volcanic history of NM, and in some cases, ancient petroglyphs. Wear long pants. These make excellent late Fall or Winter hikes, or plan on hiking early during other seasons.
