The Ancestral Puebloan World: Walk where the Old Ones walked, on the twisting paths of spectacular Tsankawi Mesa, west of Santa Fe. Accessible all year, this site gives you an intimate look at the cliff dwellings and petroglyphs of the Ancestral Puebloan people who abandoned it long ago. This is a half-day outing and an ideal family adventure.
Records of the Rockies - a geology walk: Journey back 300 million years on this leisurely two-hour walk in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, minutes from downtown Santa Fe. While we walk, we'll examine some basic geologic concepts in the best way possible: right on the outcrop, with actual fossils, and some clever visual aids to help our understanding.

Tsankawi Mesa has reopened! This spectacular site, with its magnificent views and intriguing archaelogical sites, is only a 35 minute drive from Santa Fe. Much of what makes Bandelier Monument famous can be found on its rocky trails.
Upper and middle elevation trails in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains make delightful hikes this month, especially on a hot day. Mountain meadows and stream-sides are full of wildflowers in August.
August is a popular month Bandelier National Monument, and now that the shuttle is running, we can follow in the footsteps of early visitors to the park, and take the Frey Trail down into Frijoles Canyon. Bandelier is a very popular destination in summer, so it's important to make an early start.
